I had a lot of interesting lab work from melting rocks into lava to take geophysics measurements.

My course centered around the study of the Earth in the present and the processes that created it in the past. My course touched many scientific disciplines ranging from computer simulation to interplanetary physics. I studied palaeontology, climate science, meteorology, palaeobiology, Earth physics, mining geology, soil science, petrology, oceanography, geomorphology, GIS, planetology, geochemistry and geophysics.

  Living in Arbroath Hunor Deak with fish Arbroath is a small town situated between Dundee and Montrose on the Scottish east coast. I might be biased a bit since I lived there for the past 5 years. However I travelled Scotland quite extensively from the geological wonders of the Isle of Skye to the multicultural streets of Edinburgh. Even so I couldn’t find any place similar to Arbroath. Arbroath is a brilliant mixture of geology, history, cuisine and beautiful beaches (if you know where to go). The place provides something for everybody. Arbroath is a treasure trove of history. It contains buildings and museums showcasing the entire history of Scotland. St Vigeans offers us a window to the ancient past of Scotland when the Picts roamed the land. Digs from the nearby sites provided evidence of human inhabitants going back as 3500 BC. The Arbroath Abbey tells a tale of Scotland as a free nation.   The Scottish Enlightenment and Geology The Key Figure: James Hutton Where is James Hutton from? Who is he? What were the steps in his life, the people in his life who shaped his life and ideas? How did he shape the world in turn? In my eyes the key person who represents the Scottish Enlightenment is James Hutton. He is the Great Man of historical theory, who ushered in a new age of thinking. The man who stood up to the church, the man who wondered Scotland, bringing back the knowledge to the masses, the man who touched God himself through time (not that way). Did James Hutton step forward, using the might of his mind to move rocks? To move time itself? Or James Hutton was a product of his time. He wasn’t the great man just one of many, part of a network of individuals, building Science in the pubs and tea houses of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. Geology Poems from the Here and the Beyond

  Why do I write poems? Poetry helps me explore my inner worlds. It helps me to shift through the different science subjects I have encountered and help me place it within my own philosophy. It is a way for me to process the material I have learnt in lectures, seminars and on the field trips. Poetry gives me a sense of wonder on the subject of geology. I can explain concepts such as deep time, massive volcanic eruptions or the landscape being carved open by glaciers, with the magic of poetry. Why should geologists explore poetry? I think poems are a great way to connect with the public and show an artistic side of the science of geology. The poems help a scientist get closer to the public. The poems make subjects accessible for everyone. Instead of presenting the material as dry and STEM focused, poems help to highlight science to a public who otherwise wouldn’t be interested in the modern discoveries of geology.
